Pupils follow a programme based on themes and units. The duration of each theme is two terms. Within this framework pupils explore a number of National Curriculum related modules.
Keystage 3
Pupils follow a 3 year rolling programme based around themes / units. Each theme covers two terms.
Year 1 themes are Celebrations, Work/ Industry, Leisure /Journeys
Year 2 themes are War & Peace, Health & Safety, The Environment
Year 3 themes are Communication, Homes & Families, Energy & Conservation
Within each theme pupils continue to explore a number of National Curriculum related modules.
Pupils will gain an understanding of the basic visual concepts – colour, line, texture pattern, shape and form etc. and will develop their ability to perceive and express themselves in visual form. They will learn to communicate in both two and three dimensions and will gain a knowledge of the traditions of Art History in a number of cultural contexts. They will experience a wide range of materials, techniques and equipment including the use of ICT.
ICT has the potential to make a significant contribution to pupils, visual literacy and understanding within the following areas:
• research and development of ideas – (creating and / or selecting appropriate primary and secondary source materials)
• the creative process (manipulating primary & secondary source materials on screen and using the results to develop further work.
• in creating a finished piece of work (printed, single image, documents , an animated sequence, multi media etc)
• providing a medium that can be used to explore visual phenomena and experiment with visual language.
• extending the range of tools and techniques used in art
All practical tasks are designed to link to and explore aspects of Art History.
Upper school pupils follow a two year course leading to G.C.S.E. accreditation.
Year 10 themes are, Distortion, Reflections and Music & music making
Year 11 themes are Water and Faces / emotion
Assessment
Assessment for all pupils will be through termly pupil profiles, which record all grades obtained during that unit (including homework if applicable) and the pupil’s National Curriculum level, Subject Specific Targets, which set individual goals / aims for pupils to be reviewed regularly during the year.(Using the B Squared Programme which links to CASPA to record individual pupil progress.) and Pupil Record Sheets,which give grades each lesson for Effort / Attainment / Behaviour & a brief teacher comment.
Year 11 pupils’ coursework is internally marked according to AQA criteria and either taken to group moderation with their controlled test paper, or viewed by a visiting moderator in early June.
