PROSPECTUS - Alternative Curriculum

A significant majority of pupils at Coln House School follow the set daily timetable for their particular year group, with some minor individual alterations; e.g. visits to the Support Unit, where additional assistance can be given in literacy and numeracy. Occasionally, that support will take place in class so that the pupil can work alongside the ‘normal’ lesson.

There are, however, a small number of pupils, mostly at Key Stage 4, who find it particularly challenging to participate in some aspects of the normal timetable for a variety of individual reasons. For these pupils we offer a more personalised, modified curriculum which still addresses literacy and numeracy, but focuses more on life skills, social competency, managing situations and information and the like in a less threatening environment. Without these options, quite a number of our pupils would be likely to ‘drop out’ of school at an earlier point and leave with few or no qualifications. This way, they can all graduate.
