The school promotes and celebrates fairness, responsibility and kindness. Staff must demonstrate this by example. The nature of the school and its students means we can accept and will take positive steps to manage inappropriate and disaffected behaviour. Reward for positive behaviour is our most powerful tool and all the more potent when delivered by staff who develop and maintain positive relationships with pupils. Sanctions are used, typically detentions or the withdrawal of privileges.
The school believes in an authority that is rational and fair and applied with firmness but also respect. In the context of our school, the following would be regarded as serious breaches of discipline and could result in fixed term or permanent exclusion: Actions or behaviour that seriously compromise the health and safety of any member of staff, other pupils or visitor to the school community including the families and friends of resident staff and the local communityActions or behaviour that persistently and seriously compromise and damage the maintenance of good order and disciplineActions or behaviour that persistently and seriously compromise and damage the dignity and authority of staff and learning of othersAny illegal activity including the use of illegal substances
Criminal damage could mean the involvement of the police and/or prosecution Coln House’s approach to the management of our pupils’ behaviour is one of dealing with the children individually, fairly, respectfully and consistently. There is a collective approach based on teamwork where staff manage behaviour together, sharing authority and status and promoting and protecting the dignity of the student.
